Weekly Update

Check here for a weekly update about what's going on in our class!

Week of 9/16

Upcoming Dates:

10/12 Fall Festival

Book Baggies:

Book Baggies will be coming home today! As discussed at back to school night, please try to read for at least 20 minutes every night if you are able. The reading log calendar will be found in their book baggies as well. Each night, please record how many minutes your child read, and initial the date.

I've given students a mix of books at their current independent reading level and slightly below the level they left when they finished first grade. This is intended to help "reactivate" skills that may have fallen off during the summer by reading text they can decode with confidence. Please remember, students progress through levels much more slowly in second grade due to the comprehension and inferencing skills needed to advance. If you have any concerns or questions, please let me know!

Reminders:

Lunch ordering: If your child will be ordering lunch, you may add money to your child's balance online, or send money to school in a sealed envelope with your child's name and the amount of money. ***Please review with your child what you would like them to order every morning*** In second grade, we are slowly giving responsibility for lunch ordering to the students, and we want to make sure that they order what you want them to. :)

Email: This email went out to emails that I had for parents. If you did not receive this email on your preferred email address, or If you feel a babysitter will benefit from having our weekly information and reminders, please fill out the form placed in your child’s backpack.

Ask me Abouts:

*In Second Grade, readers grow like beanstalks! What are some ways you are growing as a reader? (reading in bigger scoops, taking a grownup sneak peek, retelling the book to remind yourself what happened.)

*What small moment are you writing about in writing workshop? What details are you writing about to stretch the story out?

*Think of some small moment ideas at home to write about in school! A small moment is a story that took place over a small amount of time, but has a lot of feelings and details. An example of a small moment story could be: Falling off a scooter, getting a special surprise, how you felt the first day of school.

*What is happening in the story Mercy Watson to the Rescue?
